Want to ‘Challenge’ yourself this summer?
With graduation on the horizon, the pressure of finding a job is slowly increasing. Many students may find themselves looking for work two, three months after leaving university, but that doesn’t mean an easy ride through summer is on the cards.
Use the summer wisely. Build or learn new skills that may, ultimately, clinch a dream job when employers are narrowing down applicants.
There are many opportunities available around Birmingham and the West Midlands. This year The Challenge, a youth and community based project, are launching their three month program in the city centre. The project aims to help young people understand the responsibilities of adulthood, whilst bringing together people of different social backgrounds and encouraging them to get involved in their local community.
Primarily aimed at 16 year olds, the project is in need of ‘mentors’ to assist throughout the summer. Not only will the position provide graduates with experience working with young people on a residential youth program, but will develop leadership and team working skills.
Established in 2009, the program offers two ‘mentor’ roles as ‘team mentors’ or ‘senior mentor’. Each role challenges students to support the young people involved in the program, developing their skills and building community cohesion. A team leader from 2009 commented
“The group started as twelve individuals from different backgrounds and schools, however they quickly developed into a supportive team. Over the weeks I was hugely impressed by their spirit and the real progress that I saw in terms of their confidence, their awareness and their commitment.”
Split into three sections, The Challenge tests youths throughout the 12 week program. The final challenge gives the group one week to create a project that will bring their community together, such as organizing a street party or community sports day. The team is then given four weeks to plan and deliver the projects with the support of a dedicated ‘mentor’.
With over 150 youths from South Birmingham taking part in this summer’s project, The Challenge gives graduates the chance to hone and develop skills before launching into their first career, as well as contributing to the lives of many youths in the West Midlands.
